Michigan State is one of the most influential states in the nation, playing a large part in the automotive industry and other manufacturing sectors. The largest city in the state is Detroit with a population of 916,952 living in the city limits. Detroit, often nicknamed “the Motor City”, is the center for the automobile industry in the United States. Home to the three largest automobile companies, General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler; the city employs a large number of workers for the various car plants in the area. The city also has a well known arts and music culture which attracts people from all over to the state. The Motown sound was created in the city of Detroit and has helped play an important part in the development of the city’s culture. The housing market in Michigan has experienced some hard times due to the impact the economy has had on the automobile industry. Rising oil prices have made it more difficult for motor companies to stay alive. Unemployment in the Detroit area has been above the national average at 17% as motor companies continue to make cuts. Builders have struggled to find demand for new homes. Fortunately, the automobile industry is very closely related to the economy. As the economy turns around, the automobile industry will follow and companies will be successful again.
